Four women sing up the 11th International Istanbul Biennale

Ana Devic, Natasa Ilic, Sabina Salbolovic and Ivet Curlin are schoolmates of University of Zagreb, majoring art history or comparative literature. In 1999, they formed WHW (What, How&Whom), a small group specialized in exhibition organising. In 2009, the four women from Croatia will co-curate the 11th International Istanbul Biennial titled ‘What Keeps Mankind Alive?’ It was one of the lines at the end of the second act of The Threepenny Opera written by Bertolt Brecht 80 years ago (Why do they quote Brecht? Don’t they know he is a notorious womanizer?). Regarding the photo, it seems the biennial is leaning more to the entertainment side but I believe women are more competent than men at this age. It happens to coincide with my idea of forming a all-female curator team for 2009 Shenzhen Biennale of Urbanism and Architecture.
